THE “GREENING” OF AUNT SADIE’S
CANDIES
ASHLAND, Oregon, (March 4, 2009) – When
you think of environmentally friendly
products, reduced automobile emissions,
products with recycled materials and
those with minimal carbon footprints
come to mind. But candy, what can a
gourmet candy company do about the
environment, aside from putting a smile
on customers’ faces and making the world
an infinitely happier place?
Quite a lot. And if Oregon-based, Aunt
Sadie’s gourmet kosher candies are as
“green” as they say, it would be a first
in the category. Aunt Sadie’s Candies™
goes the extra mile to make its product
as environmentally friendly as possible,
while adhering to the strict dietary
laws required by the Rabbis to be
“eco-kosher.”
Says co-founder and candy making veteran
Peter Croyle, being aware of a product’s
impact on the environment is an
important part of being a good citizen.
“Living here in Oregon’s ‘Birkenstock’
country, protecting the environment at
Aunt Sadie’s is second nature to us,” he
said. “So when we set up the production
line and designed Aunt Sadie’s
packaging, it was a first priority,” he
continued. “And then, of course, we have
the additional dimension of rabbinical
oversight, making the task even more
critical. Living in harmony with the
environment is central to Jewish life
and, at Aunt Sadie’s Candies, it’s
certainly our way of life.”
Co-founder and self-appointed chief
taster Lee Weisel amplified what Aunt
Sadie’s does to be eco-kosher friendly.
“We have our lighting, air handling
system, heating and cooling, all
computerized on timers. We’ve insulated
every part of the facility to retain
heat and air conditioning and keep the
outside elements at bay. If there’s a
way for us to be more energy efficient
and have less impact on the environment,
we’ll find it and add it to our current
protocol,” he said.

Some of the efforts the company makes
include minimizing packaging for both
economy and waste management, recycling
at every turn, energy conservation
through a variety of initiatives and
careful choice of all-natural
ingredients. “Wherever possible,” said
Croyle, “natural, local ingredients are
used, with no preservatives and no
artificial colors.
“Our product is mostly handmade,
eliminating much of the electrical
component in the company’s use of power.
Aunt Sadie’s locally grown and processed
ingredients reduce trucking of product
to the plant. And scheduling of the work
force is also done in a strategic
manner, to maximize the use of equipment
and the company’s manufacturing
facility. Little is wasted,” he said.
Adds Weisel, “It’s part of being a good
citizen and, frankly, it’s also very
good business. Aunt Sadie’s Candies
motto is ‘Old World Sweets for a New
World.’ That new world is more
environmentally conscious than ever
before. Each of us has to do our part to
ensure a better future for the planet.
Of course, our chocolate does a lot to
make life richer to begin with. Being
environmentally friendly is just icing
on the truffles.”
